Acting Class Banner

“ACTION and OBJECTIVE: The Heart of Acting Technique” is an in-depth look at the 2 most important elements of the actor’s work in creating a role in a play. Teacher Al D’Andrea and students will use a variety of games, exercises, improvisations, and scene work to explore “what the character wants” (objective) and “what the character does to get what s/he wants” (action). Many influences on Action and Objective will be explored, such as given circumstances, location, character, emotion, and justification. The workshop is ideal for experienced actors who seek to master their understanding and use of these central elements of stagecraft, but is open to all.

Al D’Andrea has worked professionally as an actor and director in New York and Los Angeles for over 30 years. He is the former artistic director of New York’s Third Step Theatre Company, where he developed dozens of new plays and musicals for the stage, and current Artistic Director of the new Snowlion Repertory Company based in Portland. He has directed countless productions and workshops across the country, and has taught for many years. His teaching is based on the work of two theater greats with whom he studied - the legendary Stella Adler and Hollywood sensation Stephen Book, protégé of the renowned Viola Spolin.

What students are saying about the workshop:

I absolutely loved it!...(Al’s) knowledge in the field amazed me...I would recommend it to anyone who wants to step out of their shell and build on themselves - or to just have a good time.”

“I thought the class was excellent and I learned a lot that I can use.”

“I had a great experience! It was full of great stuff - Al made it fun!...I found it all fascinating! Thank you so much, Al, for your enthusiasm and patience and kindness with all of us, helping everyone feel worthy and always pointing to the positive.”

“Quite good and enjoyable...After taking classes with other teachers, this one offered a slightly different perspective...Offer the class again!”
